Olympian visits war-torn refugee camps in Jordan

Olympic speed skating champion Cindy Klassen is visiting Syrian families who are living in refugee camps and communities in Jordan.

She is distributing heaters, carpets and warm clothing this week as part of  Canadian Lutheran World Relief (CLWR).

The distribution of clothing includes sweaters donated by Canadians along with items made available through a $1.1 million grant from the Canadian government.

Klassen visited the Za’atari refugee camp on Mar. 5 where she saw the construction of a sports field and playground for youth.

This playground will allow the development of sports programming, providing a valuable therapeutic tool for youth who have been uprooted by war.

It will encourage teamwork, build confidence, physical fitness and provide a healthy reprieve from an extremely stressful situation.

The camp will provide space for kids to be active and safe in the overcrowded camp.
