An Egyptian-born Canadian journalist has been granted bail of $41,000 after more than a year of imprisonment in Cairo.
Mohamed Fahmy is legally required to be present at the next court session of his retrial on Feb. 23.
It is unclear whether Fahmy is allowed to leave the country.
“Retrial unacceptable”
Lynne Yelich, Canada’s minister of state for foreign affairs, issued a statement demanding the full release of Fahmy.
“The prospect of Mr. Fahmy standing retrial is unacceptable, and Canada advocates for the same treatment of Mr. Fahmy as other foreign nationals,” she said.
Co-accused released
Co-accused cameraman Baher Mohammed was also released on bail.
Fahmy, Baher and Australian Peter Greste were arrested on terror related charges on Dec. 29, 2013 while working for broadcasters Al Jazeera English. Peter Greste was deported on Feb. 1, 2015.
Fahmy remains the only foreign national in the case.
