Maple Leafs devilishly bad

It was a night that saw the Toronto Maple leafs hit a new low for the season.

The Leafs continued their month of embarrassment, losing 2-1 in a close contest with the New Jersey Devils that went to a shootout.

Although the Leafs managed to get a point in the standings out of the game,  it was their seventh straight loss, compounding an already terrible month for the Leafs. The buds have only won one game in the month of January, leading some fans to declare any chance of making the postseason hopeless.

The Leafs were without their captain Dion Phaneuf, who was sidelined with an hand injury and is listed as ‘week to week’ by the team.

Defencemen Morgan Rielly and Cody Franson picked up the slack left by the injured Phaneuf, playing just over 24 minutes each.

The Leafs will be looking for their second win of the month when they take on the Arizona Coyotes Jan. 29 in Toronto.
