Hamilton named ‘sanctuary city’

Hamilton city council voted unanimously in favour of a motion to allow unregistered immigrants access to city services without being questioned about their status.

Anyone who has not been granted permission to stay in Canada or has out stayed a visa is considered an undocumented individual.

This decision to become a sanctuary will have implications for a variety of public services such as public health, fire, recreation and transit.

Many individuals will be able to use public services without feeling scared. For example, undocumented women will now be able to call the police in cases of domestic abuse without fearing deportation.

Toronto was the first Canadian city to deem itself a sanctuary city. The pro-sanctuary decision was passed in Toronto in 2013.
