The polar vortex dominated headlines as cold arctic air made its way through Canada and the US in the first few weeks of 2014.
Many record temperatures were set along the way. In Ontario, there were wind chill warnings in effect, blizzard warnings, frost quakes and to top it all off, an ice storm.
The extreme weather grounded thousands of flights in North America and seriously affected other forms of transport. Many power companies in the affected areas asked their customers to conserve electricity.
