Mother to undergo mental assessment in son’s murder

A mother accused of killing her five-year-old son in Saskatoon on Saturday will undergo psychiatric tests before her trial begins.

The crown and defence filed a joint request that 35-year-old Kellie Johnson be mentally assessed to see if she is fit for trial.

The judge approved the request and Johnson will be moved to a facility in North Battleford for testing. Johnson is charged with first-degree murder after her son, Jonathan Vetter, was found dead in their Saskatoon home on Saturday.

Police responded to a 911 call reporting an injured child.  Vetter was pronounced dead at the scene. Police have not released information on how the boy died.

Johnson is due back in court Feb. 6.
