The Baffin Correctional Centre in Iqaluit is overcrowded and in a state of disrepair, according to a report that was obtained by the CBC.
An extensive list of deficits includes: mould, lack of heat, lack of running water, filthy air vents, distraught drywall, and overcrowded cells.
Beyond the poor infrastructure of the correctional centre, the report explains that some of the inmates are believed to be innocent. These inmates are there awaiting trial.
The list also reveals that guards are not pursuing punishment against drugs and contraband within the walls of the BCC.
New legislation will be introduced later this year.
