The Special Investigations Unit has been called in after an unmarked police car struck and killed a female pedestrian Feb. 13 in Scarborough.
City News reports that authorities suspect the woman was tying to cross the street near St. Clair and Warden when she was hit by a black pick-up truck. A police source confirmed with the Toronto Star that the truck involved is an undercover York Region Police vehicle.
Police arrived on the scene around 8:30 p.m. The 18-year-old woman who was hit did not have vital signs when emergency responders arrived.
Paramedics tried to resuscitate her, but their attempts were unsuccessful. She was pronounced dead at the scene of the incident.
An emergency medical services spokesperson told the Toronto Star that the driver of the vehicle remained on the scene after the incident.
The SIU is called for all investigations involving police when death, serious injury or allegations of sexual assault are involved in the incident in question.
Immediately following the accident, police had closed St. Clair Avenue from the Warden intersection to Pharmacy Ave. for the duration of the investigation.
