Earthquake below lake Ontario

A minor earthquake rumbled five kilometers below Lake Ontario Feb. 12.

The US Geological Survey is reporting a 2.9 quake occurred 40 kilometres southwest of Cobourg just before midnight. Cobourg is 82 kilometres east of Toronto.

The southern great lakes region experiences low to moderate levels of seismic activity.

Only two to three magnitude 2.5 or larger quakes have been reported in this area over the past 30 years. The region of western Quebec has reportedly experienced five times that number over the same period of time.
