Meet Jamie Brewer, New York Fashion Week’s first model with Down’s Syndrome

Actress Jamie Brewer, known for her work on American Horror Story, can now add model and runway model pioneer to her resume.

At this year’s New York Fashion Week, Brewer will break boundaries as the first woman with Down’s syndrome to take to the catwalk.

Earlier today she tweeted an image of herself getting ready for the big event.

Brewer is modeling as part of fashion designer Carrie Hammer’s “Role Models Not Runway Models” campaign which first launched at last year’s Fashion Week.

The campaign not only highlights Hammer’s latest creations, but also celebrates powerful women who do not fit into the narrow beauty standards of the fashion industry.

Hammer was prompted to choose Brewer after receiving a touching email from Katie Driscoll, creator of the “Changing the Face of Beauty” organization, who encouraged her to put an inspiring woman with a disability on the runway.

Brewer was chosen due to her incredible work within the Down Syndrome community, which includes working with multiple non-profits like the National Down Syndrome Congress and American Association of People with Disabilities of the Unites States.
