Philippine president to oversee signing of historic peace deal

Philippine President Beningo Aquino III will watch over the signing of a peace agreement with rebel group Moro Islamic Liberation Front on Mar. 27, reports Al Jazeera.

The Moro Islamic Liberation Front is the country’s largest Muslim rebel group. The peace deal will recreate the Bangsamoro region as autonomous.

Reports state President Aquino III understands “meaningful autonomy” for the Philippines’ Muslim community will bring both peace and economic growth to the poor region.

Since the 1970s, different Philippine leaders have failed to end violence plaguing the country’s south. Al Jazeera says supporters hope the peace deal will end 40 years of armed conflict that has killed roughly 120,000 people and displaced over two million.
