Real-life gangster portrayed in Goodfellas in custody

New York resident and crime boss Vincent Asaro was taken into custody by FBI agents Jan 23.  Five members of the Bonanno crime family, including Asaro’s son and three others, were arrested and charged with crimes including racketeering, murder and the long, unsolved Lufthansa heist.

The $6 million Lufthansa heist at Kennedy airport happened more than 30 years ago and has remained one of the largest cash thefts in American history.

On Dec. 11, 1978 hooded gunmen invaded a cargo terminal at John F. Kennedy International airport and stole about $5 million in untraceable U.S. currency. The cash was never found and authorities say another $1 million in jewelry was also taken.

The heist was dramatized in 1990 by Martin Scorsese in the cult-classic mega-hit, Goodfellas

All five defendants are in custody and awaiting appearances in federal court.
