A 180-year-old hockey stick put up for sale on ebay Mar. 5 is already receiving bids of more than $25, 000.
Owner Mark Presley of Berwick, Nova Scotia has allowed bidding until Mar. 15 and set a reserve price, meaning the stick won’t sell unless a minimum amount is met.
Presley will not disclose what that amount is. And current offers around $25,000 haven’t yet matched it.
Presley claims it’s the oldest hockey stick to date, crafted between 1835-1838 near Pottle Lake and North Sydney, N.S., and believed to have been used by the Moffatt family.
He bought the stick for $1000 in 2008 from a retired barber in North Sydney who had it displayed in his shop for 30 years. The barber said Charlie Moffatt had given him the stick years earlier.
Although Presley hasn’t had the stick officially appraised, he’s expecting it to go for much more for than $1000, the Canadian Press reports.
Presley created themoffitstick.com, a website dedicated to the stick’s history and scientific study.
