Thirty-eight-year-old Martin St. Louis is getting the last-minute nod to compete in men’s Olympic hockey.
The announcement comes on the heels of news that Tampa Bay Lightning superstar Steven Stamkos can’t play due to injury. Stamkos was questionable to play since he shattered his tibia slamming into a goal post in early November last year.
At a press conference today, St. Louis said he’s excited to participate in this year’s Olympics.
The speedy NHL veteran was originally left off Canada’s roster due to some unpopular player choices, and with expectations Stamkos would be healthy in time to play.
Twitter ignited in the wake of the news with many criticising Executive Director of Team Canada Steve Yzerman’s initial decision to omit St. Louis from the team:
It will be St. Louis’ second Olympic appearance after playing for Canada in Torino 2006. He’s tied for 16th place in the NHL with 54 points.
