South Korea sent a “stern warning” to its peninsula partner today, as a response to the North’s third nuclear test. The test, which took place on Tuesday, defied United Nation Sanctions and was an attempt to “bolster its defences due to the hostility of the United States,” according to a press release from North Korea’s capital, Pyongyang.
This nuclear test was the biggest the North has tried to date, and created “evidence of an unusual seismic event” that was picked up by the Comprehensive Nuclear-Test-Ban Treaty Organization. The CTBO also noted that the location was roughly the same as the 2006 and 2009 nuclear tests. CTBTO Executive Secretary Tibor Tóth said that if continued, the nuclear test would constitute “a clear threat to international peace and security.”
This action was condemned by several countries close to the Koreas, including Japan and North Korea’s ally China. North Korea retaliated against the disapproving rhetoric by repeating its own, reminding the world that any further sanctions against them would provoke further action.
