Flogging of Saudi blogger postponed

Raif Badawi, the Saudi blogger whose public flogging caused an international outcry, has been postponed.

The postponement came after a committee comprised of eight doctors carried out a series of tests on Badawi at the King Fahd Hospital in Jeddah in Saudi Arabia on Jan. 21.

Amnesty International is reporting that the doctors recommended that the flogging should not be carried out because Badawi is too weak to tolerate further injuries.

He received the first round of 50 lashes on Jan. 9, 2015. The flogging was shown on YouTube, which shows Badawi being beaten in public square outside a mosque in Jeddah.

Badawi was sentenced to 10 years imprisonment and 1,000 lashes in May 2013. He was arrested in 2012 for insulting Islam in his website named Free Saudi Liberals.
