Plans for the expansion of the BMO soccer stadium, home to the Toronto Football Club, were announced at a public meeting at Exhibition Place Mar. 5.
The stadium currently houses 20,000 seats and the expansion will add another 10,000. In addition to the seats, a roof will also be added to BMO field.
The cost of all these renovations has not yet been released. The original cost for the construction of the building in 2007 was just over $60 million.
Councillor Mike Layton, who represents the area, says that the resident population around BMO field has been increasing rapidly due to all the condo construction in the neighbourhood, 680 news reports.
Layton says the expanded venue may lead to traffic congestion in the neighbourhood.
While construction is taking place, Toronto FC will most likely have to play at another venue. The timeline for the expansion is still not known.
The Toronto Star reported that the Toronto Argos may also be using the field after the expansion. The team announced it would no longer be playing at the Rogers Centre once the Blue Jays install a grass field in 2017.
