Former Canadian brigadier-general Daniel Menard has reportedly been arrested in Afghanistan for gun smuggling charges.
CBC says Menard has spent the last three weeks in jail after being arrested by Afghanistan’s Interior Ministry.
Afghanistan has strict rules regarding private ministry contractors and the possession and use of military gear.
A report from Kabul alleges Menard is accused of possessing military equipment without permission, including 129 rifles and 148 radios.
CBC also says Canada’s Foreign Affairs Department is aware of the arrest and that consular services are being provided as Menard is a Canadian citizen.
Menard used to be the head of Canada’s military mission in Afghanistan. He ended up leaving the military after pleading guilty to charges of being intimate with a subordinate.
