Premier Kathleen Wynne announced Highway 93 will be renamed in honour of Winter X Games athlete Sarah Burke.
Among her accomplishments, Burke was successful in lobbying for women to participate in freestyle events on equal standing with men in the Winter X Games.
Her continued efforts within the world of sports made her an inspiration to young athletes everywhere.
“Her efforts in lobbying to have halfpipe skiing added to the Olympic program for the Sochi 2014 Olympic Winter Games is a testament to her dedication to her craft and high performance sport in Canada,” said Marcel Aubut, president of the Canadian Olympic Committee.
After winning four gold medals in the Winter X Games, Burke died during a training accident in 2012.
The Sarah Burke Memorial Highway runs for 24km in Simcoe County where Burke was born and raised.
In her announcement, Wynne said the highway will be a lasting reminder of Burke’s accomplishments.
