Libya will compensate women who were raped during the 2011 uprising that topped former ruler Muammar Gaddafi, according to the cabinet.
Although an exact number was not announced, the International Criminal Court said that hundreds of women were raped during the eight-month conflict as pro-Gaddafi forces are alleged to have used rape as a weapon.
The decree, which still needs congressional approval, will put women on the same level as wounded ex-fighters.The compensation amount has not yet been determined.
Three years later
Voters are currently electing a body to write a new constitution – three years after the uprising began. The body will be comprised of a total of 60 members, 20 from each of Libya’s regions.
