Breakfast of champions: TO bars may open at 6 a.m.

Would you like a Bloody Mary with your eggs?

Most of us may never have been asked — let alone answered — but if Toronto Councillor Mike Layton’s motion passes, we could be imbibing at breakfast.

Layton will be proposing a motion to council on Feb. 18 to allow bars to open their doors at 6 a.m. for the last four days of the Olympics.

Layton told CP24 in an interview that someone tweeted the idea to him a couple of weeks ago and he doesn’t see the harm.

It’s not an entirely foreign concept, as bars were given permission to open at 10 a.m. during the 2010 World Cup.

With the 2014 Sochi schedule, the men’s gold medal game is set for 7 a.m. on Feb. 23 and the women’s bronze medal game is Feb. 20 at 7 a.m.

The City of Toronto Act gives council the power to extend bar hours “during events of municipal, provincial, national or international significance.”

Layton will need two-thirds of council to simply trigger a debate on the idea and a majority to agree to the change, but he told Toronto Star that he thinks it will ultimately pass.

He added that the change isn’t contingent on Team Canada being in the gold medal game.

So, should hell freeze over and Canada not make the finals, people will still be able to enjoy the game with an early drink.

The response on Twitter has shown the public’s competing views.
