Meagan Duhamel and Eric Radford put in a stunning round in the figure skating pairs short program team event on Feb.6.
Their score advanced Canada to second place in the team event. Patrick Chan competed Feb. 6, and his score left Canada in third place.
Canada’s team is the gold medal favourite for the inaugural team event. The scores from eight figure skating events are combined to decide the winner.
The Canadian pair finished with a score of 73.10, edging out the Chinese pair whose final score was 71.01.
The Russian team was Duhamel and Radford’s biggest competition. Tatiana Volosozhar and Maxim Trankov outperformed all other teams in this competition, setting the stage for what will likely be another Russian gold medal in pairs skating. Their final score was an impressive 83.79.
The results in each event translate into a number score from 1-10. First place in an event receives ten points, and tenth place receives one point.
The team event continues on Saturday with the ice dance short program and ladies short program. The top five teams after the short programs will qualify for the medal round free skates.
