A Washington D.C. jury ruled today that a German man is guilty of murdering his 91-year-old wife.
It took the jury only half a day to convict the man, Albrecht Muth, 49, who murdered his 91-year-old wife Viola Drath, a journalist and socialite. He didn’t testify during the trial.
Muth’s lawyers believe that there was no evidence that connects him to the murder. But prosecutors maintain that he was motivated by money, listed as the biggest benefactor of Drath’s will, the Associated Press reports.
Muth made news in Washington back in August 2011 when Drath was found dead in the couple’s Georgetown home. Detectives charged Muth with strangling and murdering his wife when they determined that only the pair were home at the time of her death with no signs of forced entry.
AP reports his behaviour prior to the murder, and leading up to the trial was bizarre. Muth claims to be an Iraqi brigadier general, and adviser to Iraqi insurgent leader Moqtada al-Sadr. He’s known to have walked around Georgetown wearing what he dubbed as an Iraqi military uniform. His reasons for representing himself in this way are unclear.
