Oakville native Rohan Boney of the McMaster Marauders has been named the rookie of the year in the Ontario University Athletics West Division and a member of the Canadian Interuniversity Sport’s all-rookie team.
The graduate of Loyola Secondary School averaged more than 25 minutes per game this season for the Marauders, compiling more than 10 points and five rebounds per game. He shot 56.5 per cent from the floor, top five in the OUA.
He succeeds McMaster teammate Adam Presutti – another Oakville native and Loyola grad – as the top first-year player in the OUA West Division. Presutti was also the CIS rookie of the year last season.
Another former Loyola teammate Mike Andrews, who’s now at Bishop’s University in Sherbrooke, has been chosen to the second team all-Canadian.
And yet another Loyola grad, Mike L’Africain, is in the mix this weekend as his Ottawa GeeGees are the No. 3 seed for the CIS men’s basketball championship in Ottawa.
The GeeGees lost the OUA final to their Ottawa rivals, the Carleton Ravens. L’Africain was the top rookie in the OUA East Division one year ago.
Two other Oakville players are also taking part in the eight-team CIS tournament. Ryan Thompson, a graduate of St. Thomas Aquinas, plays for the Lakehead Thunderwolves in Thunder Bay. Lakehead won OUA bronze.
Abbey Park graduate Chris McLaughlin is with the University of Victoria, which lost the Canada West final to UBC.
